Costa Rica is known by true sportsmen around the world for its abundance of large billfish. The most widely caught are sailfish throughout the whole year. Marlin come in three main species that include blue, black, and striped. These prized billfish can run in excess of 1,200 pounds and take over an hour to pull in.

Big marlin are not the only prized fish though. Many anglers pursue the very interesting Roosterfish. These prized trophies can exceed 80lbs. and really put up a good fight. Another challenging monster is yellowfin tuna. Many times when schools are found by watching for birds, fishermen will get so tired of reeling in these strong game fish they will move on to other waters.

Los Suenos Marina which is located just north of Jaco Beach at Playa Herradura. Located just two hours from San Jose, it is the largest marina in the country and the most luxurious without a doubt.

Quepos  is known for excellent sport fishing and is 4 hours from the international airport in San Jose. Prices are a little cheaper and it’s off the beaten path by tourists to a degree.

Tamarindo is located in the northwestern part of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste. Travelers and anglers alike enjoy how close it is to the airport in Liberia. Well known for huge Marlins, though the winds can be a little rough.

Other areas like Flamingo, Ocotal, Puerto Jimenez, and Crocodile Bay are fish hotspots as well.
